EGR Freight Gateway Project

The Eastern Goldfields Railway (EGR) – the freight gateway to Western Australia – is the busiest part of Brookfield Rail’s extensive network. It carries 132,000 passengers travelling on over 1,100 services per annum, including the major tourist icon the Indian Pacific, as well as moving 80% of all general freight from the east coast of Australia.

The EGR constantly requires forward planning to keep pace with increasing demand, and as such the EGR Freight Gateway Project is crucial to the railway’s future. The Federal Government, through their Infrastructure Australia National Building Program, committed $95 million in the 2010 budget for this project.

The project will see replacement of 185 kilometres of rail, to deliver an improvement in the service to rail users by reducing congestion through enhanced safety, increased speeds and heavier axle loads. The project will support 315 jobs and take approximately 11 months to complete.

The EGR Freight Gateway Project is a great example of public and private sector partnership investing in strategic, vital infrastructure.
