The benefits of rail in providing a low emissions transport solution are globally recognised, and the transportation of freight by rail is three times more efficient than road freight.
Carrying the same capacity of that of 150 trucks, rail transport benefits both the community and the environment by reducing the amount of traffic on the road and by producing less than one third of the greenhouse gas emissions per tonne kilometre produced by road fright.
Brookfield Rail’s environmental management system is built around requirement ISO 14001.
Brookfield Rail also maintains a register of declared rare flora, and preserves and cultivates species growing in and around our rail corridors. Through the use of marking and fencing, we aim to ensure the survival of these rare and beautiful plants across Western Australia.
Similarly, in the attempt to ensure that weeds do not become resistant to herbicides, Brookfield Rail invests in sending species of weeds to South Australia, where their level of resistance is tested. From this, Brookfield Rail is able to make a judgement as to the best herbicide to spray to decrease resistance. This also works to benefit local farmers, ensuring the properties around the rail corridor are not overrun with resistant strains of unwanted flora.
